Norwegian Given Name Baard Nilson

B: November 19,1826

D: April 20 1885

Immigrated from Bergen, Norway on the ship “Favorite” 1849.  Hill was the literal translation from the farm where he had lived in Norway.  His brother Knut kept the name Nelson.  Baard was Americanized to Barney.

Marriages & Children

 

Married: Sara Ness B:1834  (changed from Seri Yttrenaes also spelled Serre)  Sara immigrated with her mother and was 14yrs old when they settled in Lisbon.  Also traveling aboard the Favorite,presumably with her parents. Information about the ship Favorite indicates that they sailed from Kragerø, Norway, on May 26, 1849, and arrived in New York on July 31. 

Sara met Barney in Lisbon and married around 1853.

Barney and Sara immigrated to Palestine township, with her sister Kari and brother in-law Ole Fatland and the rest of the original June 1855 group.

Sara’s father: was Henrik Larsson Vedel

Sara’s mother: was Seri Pedersdatter Yttrenaes.

Sara’s siblings: immigrated 2 years prior. Kari Nass (Hanson) M: Ole Fatland.

Children:

Betsey Came with original 111  B: 1854, Lisbon Ill. D: 1861 Shortly after arrival in Huxley.

John Henry B:1855 in Iowa M 1: Isabell Holland June 01, 1886  They lived and farmed in Huxley and raised 9 Children including Burnette “Nettie” Hill M: Sabin Sydness, Clarence Hill. M 2: Alice Gord. Thier children were: Beverly, Irvin, Marion, Robert and Clyde.

Sarah B:1853 In Iowa.  M1: Ole Lande March 10, 1883. Children:  Amos I. & Helen.  Sarah M2 John Opsanger in 1891.

Peter B:1865 In Iowa  – did not marry

Betsey (2)  (1880 census has name as Bertha) B: 1867 In Iowa M: Amos Lande.  According to Lois Hill, Amos Lande “was a prominent man in Slater, Iowa,” and I think he may have been a brother to Ole, although I have no real evidence for this. (Does anyone out there know?)

Peter – was living in the household of his sister Betsey and her husband Amos Lande in the 1895 Iowa Census.
