In 1847 Dan W. Ballard got permission for himself and his brother, Mormon Ballard to select and locate claims. March 8, 1848 they took possession of their claims, which they occupied for many years. The family name was given to the Grove. Each brother built a long house, 14×16 feet. Dan reported he voted in Des Moines and voted in the 1848 presidential election. In that fall Simeon (his father) joined his two sons. Its reported he passed away about two years later. His coffin was made by Squire M. Cory. Mr. Cory settled at the grove in the spring of 1850. Ben Jeffers, Rueben Baldock and Washington Thomas had also made their land selections and brought their families by 1850
